Another reason to love our country
In this series of articles, I’m going to explore truly Canadian wine and food pairings. Wine pairing books are loaded with great pairing combinations. Oysters and Muscadet. Port and Stilton. Champagne and Pringles (don’t knock it ‘till you’ve tried it…).
Canadian foods are never part of that conversation and neither are Canadian wines. Yet, it is not difficult to find great pairings when using basic food and wine pairings techniques.
Let’s see if we can find some new Canadian classic pairings!
Patriotic Pairing #4
The pairing celebrates one area of the country with a lot of history, although not a lot of wine history. Though on the surface they might seem like an unlikely pairing, there are many good reasons why these two go together.

Hawkin’s Cheezies with Closson Chase Chardonnay
Confession time. As a kid, I hated cheezies of any kind. I didn’t like cheese at all. Don’t tell my wine friends, but they just never appealed to me. I ate plain potato chips and burgers without anything on them, even ketchup.
Hawkins Cheezies were a later addition to my diet, arriving long after wine had become a passion and career. An ex-girlfriend of mine loved them and brought them over for a movie night. They had me at the first skull-rattling crunch.
